Are kettlebells still popular?

Yes, very. Kettlebells have seen a resurgence in the last 10 years thanks to CrossFit enthusiasts and the rise of functional movement exercises. You can find countless videos demonstrating how to use kettlebells on both YouTube and Instagram.

What’s the best kettlebell to get

You can use kettlebells to work out virtually every muscle group in your body! Some of our favourite kettlebell exercises include: 

  • Single Handed Deadlift - feet shoulder width, lean forward with a straight back, grab the kettlebell with one arm, bring the hips forward and straighten the legs to lift the weight. Muscles worked: glutes, hamstrings, quads, traps, forearms, and more. 

  • Single leg deadlift - feet shoulder width, lean on your right foot, straighten the leg with a microbend in the knee, slowly extend your left leg back straight while hinging your torso forward at the same time, with a straight back. Grab the kettlebell and carefully lower your back leg while straightening your torso to stand up again. 

  • Slingshot - stand with your feet straight, pick up a kettlebell with a straight back and legs, hold it with both hands in front of you. Then rotate the kettlebell around your body, around the hips where you naturally hold it, by passing it from your right hand to your left hand. Keep your chest lifted and your back straight and look forward. This is an amazing exercise to improve your shoulder range of motion and it also trains core and back!

Which kettlebell should I get?

Kettlebells come in different weights, shapes, and forms. They also come in different materials and can even be adjustable. The perfect kettlebell for you depends on what exercises you want to do, how much room you have in your home gym, and your budget:

Kettlebell types and weights

  • Cast iron: great for beginners as you can use it with both hands and it’s versatile. It goes up in size based on the weight.

  • Adjustable: if you are low on space, adjustable kettlebells are the way to go. The quality and durability can sometimes be lacking because of the many moving parts compared to full cast iron kettlebells. 

  • Vinyl coated: this material doesn’t have much grip on the handles so it’s not a very safe option unless you are trying to protect your floors at home.

You can do some amazing things with kettlebells so we definitely recommend getting a set! They will last you a lifetime and you only need to get a few to get started: 8kg (17lbs), 12kg (26lbs), 16kg (35lbs), 24kg (53lbs), 32kg (70lbs).
