What is an Air Bike and do I need one?

What’s an Air Bike?

We know cardio is important but how many people genuinely enjoy doing it? This might all change with a magical new machine on the market that cuts your cardio time in half. On a new fitness contraption called an Air Bike or fan bike, you can work up a real sweat and burn fat quickly. It looks like someone put an exercise bike and an elliptical together - it has pedals attached to a fan and long handles you push with your arms. It’s a much more productive workout as you are using multiple muscle groups at high intensity. This machine can come with a hefty price tag so let’s see if it’s worth it.

Air Bike Advantages

  • Perfect for extremely intense but short workouts

  • Works out upper and lower body at the same time

  • Fantastic for warm-up

  • Your lungs work harder to keep up, increasing stamina

  • Unlimited resistance - the harder you push and pedal, the harder the fan works, and the more resistance you get

  • Ideal for sports and injury rehabilitation as it’s gentle on the joints

Air Bike Disadvantages

  • You’ll get really sweaty

  • Can push your heart and lungs into an anaerobic state where you’re gasping for breath

  • Can come at a high cost

Air Bikes have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with a CrossFit craze as this machine is perfect for HIIT workouts. And we might have lied to you, an Air Bike is often called the “Misery Machine” and “Devil’s Tricycle” and less the magical machine we promised. But the benefits for you are vast! Our verdict? It’s definitely worth it. If you have enough space to flail your arms and the price tag isn’t an issue, we highly recommend investing in an Air Bike.
