Strength training at home workouts

Just like stretching is an important part of any fitness routine, strength training is key to empower your muscles and make them more resilient. It’s healthy and will help boost your metabolism too. Strength training is key to counteract passive sitting and a sedentary lifestyle.

You can really do strength training at home with anything you have, from just bodyweight to dumbbells and kettlebells. Here are a few examples:

  • With free weights - lunges, deadlifts, bicep curls, tricep extensions, lat pulls downs, push-ups from weights.

  • With a bench - bench press, core training

  • Chin-up and pull-up bar for arms, shoulders, and back, depending on the variation and your grip; leg raises, knee raises, and oblique twists for core

  • Squat racks for glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves

Now that you know the kind of strength training exercises you can easily do at home, you can consider the following list of equipment for your very own home gym. Think about the exercises you will do consistently and frequently and which piece of strength training equipment will serve the most use to you. Also consider how much space you have in your home gym and of course, your budget.

Strength training equipment for your home gym:

  • Benches: these can be adjustable and non-adjustable, depending on your needs

  • Chin-up and pull-up bars: both for a more professional home gym and over-the-door variant

  • Sit-up benches/hyperextension: different than a traditional bench with more options for exercises

  • Power cages and squat racks: great for attaching accessories like gym rings and resistance bands and training multiple muscle groups at once

  • Gym towers: versatile and safe, if you have the space for it

  • Weights: dumbbells, kettlebells, plates, sandbags. Purchase depending on the surface of your home gym and how much storage space you have.

  • An exercise mat and resistance bands: these accessories will help with any strength training workout you have planned and are also great for general stretching and flexibility training.

You can start strength training at home any time, with a few simple pieces of equipment or even objects you already have like books and a yoga mat! The key is to just start!
